          Introduction

Loose fitting, and single-purpose forward directed helmet mounted flashlights are a thing of the past!   Bayco Company, based in the United States, has introduced a Nightstick helmet light designed for firefighting.  The Nightstick NSP-4650B Helmet-Mounted Multi-Function Dual-Light Flashlight is one of the most versatile, hands free/helmet-mounted lights available.

The Nightstick features a mounting clamp that permits this multi-purpose light to fit around goggles, face shields or other obstructions while retaining the forward aim of its narrow flashlight beam. The pivot also allows for plumb mounting on all types of fire helmets.

          Floodlight

The floodlight is set at 45 degrees to the main light

Just below the flashlight and strategically angled at 45 degrees is a floodlight with adjustable brightness.  The soft, defused light pattern eliminates a bright center spot and assists the operator in safely achieving several activities such as illuminating the ground as the user walks to prevent trips and falls as well as allowing the user to read the SCBA gauge in a smoke-filled environment.

          Green Tail Light

Located at the rear of the Nightstick NSP-4650B is a green LED tail light that enables team members to identify the user in smoke-filled or dusty environments. Per a recent study by NIOSH, a green light is more visible than any other colour in a smoke-filled setting, adding to the safety of firefighters.

          Ratings

The NSP 4650B is IP-X7 rated, waterproof and meets all requirements for NFPA-1971-8.6 as well as being chemical and impact resistant (2-meter drop rating).

          Battery and Beam

The power source for this practical light is CR-123 Lithium Primary Batteries which come standard with the light, providing over 50,000 hours of LED life.  The flashlight produces 220 lumens in its high mode for a rated beam distance of 600 feet with a 3.5-hour runtime on a fresh CR123 Lithium battery pair (included).  A pushbutton control can also select 100 lumens (390 feet and 10 hours) or 30 lumens (193 feet and 33.5 hours).

When “survival” mode is enabled, the light will run for 60+ hours at 15 lumens.

          Size and Weight

          • Length: 3.2 in (82 mm)
          • Width: 1.4 in (36 mm)
          • Weight: 6 oz (143 g)
          • Diameter: 1.1 in (29 mm)

          A Few Downsides

The dual-button switch can be a little difficult to operate with structure gloves.  Also, there are reports of the hinge on the mount rusting or failing.  The light could also be mounted above the brim, but you would lose use of the floodlight.

          Conclusion:

All in all the Bayco Company has done an outstanding job in design and construction of the Nightstick NSP-4650B Helmet-Mounted Multi-Function Dual-Light Flashlight.  This light addresses both safety and convenience, it is constructed of high quality materials and is a high-performance light at an affordable cost (usually around $69.99).  The floodlight and green taillight are great features.  With a lifetime, limited warranty; it is a light worth checking out.  Still not convinced, read more reviews about the Nightstick here.

May I get the definition or reference link to definition of what NIOSH stands for?

I’m fascinated with this since I was looking for an item just like this but didn’t know where to look or how to explain such device. I was intrigued with how well written & the selection of invaluable information covers this site.

Yes, NIOSH stands for National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. NIOSH is the government regulatory agency responsible for making safety recommendations in regards to the workplace. Thank you for your kind words!
