Boston Leather is a company that specializes in making a variety of leather products for uniformed personnel. Based out of Sterling, Illinois, Boston Leather has been making quality leather products since 1938. On their website, BL boasts that all leather products are made from U.S. steers, tanned in the U.S., and made in their Sterling Illinois shop.
One of the most popular products made by BL for firefighters is the 9175 line of suspenders. These suspenders come in two sizes, regular (model 9175) will fit firefighters up to 6’1″ and XL (Model 9175XL) will fit those that are 6’2″ and taller. These suspenders will attach to any bunker gear that has traditional button attachment points.
I’ve worn these suspenders for at least six years now and have had very few issues with them. When I initially started wearing the 9175s, the small loop that is riveted to the left shoulder strap (designed to clip the radio mic to) rubbed on my collar bone. Since I don’t use the loop anyway, I drilled out the rivets and removed the radio strap. I know several other people with these suspenders and they didn’t have any issues with the mic loop. Also I have noticed that the extra tails in the front near the buckles have a tendency to “curl” up. I fixed that problem with a piece of cloth medical tape.
Once broken in, they are extremely comfortable. They will not stretch out like cloth suspenders and will last many years longer. Even the heavy duty elastic in the back hasn’t stretched out. I’ve personally never had any issues with the leather becoming brittle, but if that is a concern of yours, leather conditioner can be used on the suspenders.
Overall, these suspenders are high in quality and are a great choice for the price. I don’t think you will be disappointed with this purchase, I know I’m not. Find out more about them by clicking here.
